Boris Dralyuk will talk about his latest translation, Alexander Voloshin’s Sidetracked: Exile in Hollywood. Born in Ukraine in 1884, Voloshin fought in the Russian Civil War, fled from Crimea, and supported himself as an “extra” on Hollywood sets in the 1920s and 1930s. In his warm, witty poem, he chronicles the struggles of his fellow émigrés as they escape a collapsing nation and build new lives abroad—only to find that the winds of history never die down for long. The experiences he brings to vivid life in his verse should resonate with all those who have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety and prosperity, while his indomitable spirit and good humor should inspire them to look for the silver linings around even the darkest clouds.
The Free Eggs to Order breakfast will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the seminar at 10:30 a.m. There is no cost to attend, but please indicate your participation through event registration.
