From the time of Catherine the Great, who confined them to her empire’s Pale of Settlement, to the present day, when they take leading positions in the government, the Jews of Ukraine have contributed mightily to the culture of their nation. In this presentation, Ukrainian-American writer, editor and translator Boris Dralyuk will offer a brief history of Ukrainian Jewry. He will touch on intellectual movements like the Haskalah and the tragedies of the pogroms and the Shoah, but he will mostly focus on the achievements of Ukrainian Jewish authors and entertainers like Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Babel, Isa Kremer, and Leonid Utyosov, whose names are forever linked to his own native city, Odesa. Breakfast at 9:45 a.m, Seminar at 10:30 a.m.
