Blatt + Blue: The Merchant of Venice (2004)

  • Congregation B'nai Emunah 1719 South Owasso Avenue Tulsa, Oklahoma 74120 USA (map)

In The Merchant of Venice (2004), written by William Shakespeare, the main character, Antonio, played by Jeremy Irons, defaults on a large loan provided by a Jewish moneylender, Shylock, played by Al Pacino. Debate exists on whether the play is anti-Semitic, with Shylock's insistence on his legal right to the pound of flesh being in opposition to Shylock's seemingly universal plea for the rights of all people suffering discrimination. Together we’ll further discuss the debate.

The film is available for viewing on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, or YouTubeTV for a minimal fee.

Blatt + Blue expresses the Synagogue’s commitment to an inclusive and pluralistic vision of the Jewish world. Newcomers are welcome to join the dialogue.
